Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun), with the aim to further advance its academic competency, met with its stakeholders on a Stakeholders’ Summit last 20 December 2016, at the Sequoia Hall of the Acacia Hotel, Alabang.
The aim of the event was to meet and discuss with the industry partners of PLMun, the possible recommendations on how PLMun students, and further on graduates, can meet the expectations of their possible future employers in the industry. In lieu of this, representatives coming from different companies and industry partners of the different colleges of PLMun were invited.
The event started with an invocation led by the PLMun Chorale as well as the singing of the National Anthem, Muntinlupa March, and the PLMun Hymn. The University President, Dr. Elena E. Presnedi, delivered an opening statement for the event followed by the Chairman’s Message, presented by the Chairman of the Board of Regents of PLMun, and City Mayor, Hon. Atty. Jaime R. Fresnedi.
To further set the structure of the event, Dr. Teresita C. Fortuna, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, introduced the Objectives of the Focus Group Discussion, wherein the representatives were grouped according to their career or industry categories.
One of the highlight of the Summit was the Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between PLMun and Dr. Carl E. Balita, for the Review Centre proposed in the University. Dr. Carl E. Balita, likewise, delivered a special message for the Stakeholders and University Officials.
The results of the Focus Group Discussions per department/college are as follows:
Office of the Student Affairs
1. Provision of official social media account where they (industry partners) can engage more with PLMun administration; can build up their relationship with their student-scholars; and where the scholars may communicate and share their testimonies and success stories.
2. Integration of industry-related subjects/courses like business processing operation, work ethics, communication skills, and personality development.
3. Industry exposure of students during their second year and third year before taking up their On-the-Job Training/practicum; it may enhance the students’ interpersonal skills and their familiarization with the industry/company setting.
College of Arts and Science
BA in Communication
1. Offer elective courses in multimedia arts (animation, game design, and photography).
2. Offer an elective course in marketing communication.
3. Offer performing arts courses for specific clienteles.
4. Upgrade media laboratory, facilities and equipment.
BA in Political Science
1. Students’ communication skills must be enhanced both oral and written.
2. 300 hours of the on-the-job training instead of 200 hours.
3. Personality development training for the students.
1. Practicum (OJT) must be in the 4th year level in the curriculum.
2. Enhance the oral and written communication skills of the students.
3. Improve personality characteristics specifically interpersonal skills and corporate grooming.
4. Enhance the students’ critical thinking skills and initiative.
College of Business Administration
1. There should be a need to strengthen the Outcomes-Based Education, in order to familiarize the students with the reality of work situations in the corporate world to comply with the requirements of Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
2. There should be an alignment of the curriculum to the needs of the industry to avoid the mismatch of job skills.
3. There should be a strengthening of the basic skills in terms of communication, personality development, and work skills.
4. Intensifying of the higher order thinking skills (H.O.T.S.) of students and providing them an orientation of time management and priorities as well.
5. Trainings and seminars should be intensified to increase the knowledge in business so they can be more equipped and competitive.
College of Information Technology and Computer Studies
1. Deployment of Information Technology faculty to industry partners for them to be exposed with the actual setting of Information and Communications Technology in the industry.
2. Adapt new ICT trends in the curriculum.
3. Provide intensive training in systems analysis and programming.
4. Boost student confidence and provide more opportunities in establishing their communication skills in the English language.
5. Give additional training in IT project presentation and creation of reports and documentation.
6. Benchmarking with other universities and ICT industries (local and abroad).
7. Balance the academic and training experience of students.
8. Conduct training programs during summer.
9. OJT subjects must be offered during the last semester of the whole program.
College of Teacher Education
1. The existing graduate program offering, Master of Arts in Education major in Guidance and Counseling (MAED-GC) does not have a market. Department of Education (DepEd) does not have a plantilla item to offer to MAED-GC graduates. Thus, DepEd officials (Dr. Mauro De Gulan) recommend the abolition of the program.
2. Instead, the teacher education experts strongly recommend the offering of Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with various areas of specialization, such as English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, Social Science, which the industry, DepEd schools, needs.
3. Strengthen the values formation program of the College of Teacher Education. Inclusion of values education in the curriculum is strongly recommended, as well.
4. In behalf of the private school administrators, the president of Muntinlupa Private Schools Association requests for deployment of student teachers in the private schools with corresponding Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).
5. Offering of additional specialization / majorship in the undergraduate programs, such as Values Education, Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), Chemistry, and Physics.
6. The group recommends that MAPEH major be offered separately, such as Major in Music, Education, Art Education, Physical Education, and Health Education.
7. Most importantly, DepEd recommends a separate stakeholders’ forum exclusively for teacher education group to lengthily discuss the vertical alignment of teacher education curriculum with the K to 12 curriculum.
The different Deans of the Colleges namely Dr. Jaime Gutierrez Ang, Dean of College of Arts and Science; Dr. Danilo B. Solayao, Dean of College of Teacher Education; Atty. Ernesto V. Cabrera, Dean of College of Criminal Justice; Prof. Alain J. Anuevo, Dean of College of Information Technology and Computer Studies; Prof. Ramonito A. Mesina, Dean of College of Business Administration; and Dr. Corazon C. Obnamia, Dean of Graduate School, were present in this event, wherein they led the aforementioned focus group discussions.
